    The sudden demise of Deepal was shocking and almost impossible to believe. It has shown us once again that in the midst of life, we are in death.

    I have known Deepal as a school boy who was one class junior to me at S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia. I remember Deepal being an active debater in College, who showed his oratorical skills very early in the day.

    He always impressed me as a quiet and unassuming guy, who was perceptive and focused on whatever he did.

A friend of mine from international consultancy firm Boston Consulting Group (BCG) recently told me about a fascinating survey they have just completed, entitled, “ Creating People Advantage: How to Address HR Challenges Worldwide Through 2015”. The survey was BCG’s attempt to try and get a feel for how companies around the world manage their people.

Companies have always struggled with how to measure staff performance and their levels of engagement.  The BCG survey interviewed 4700 executives in 83 countries on 17 issues which ranged from leadership development and managing talent to population demographics. The majority of the executives that were interviewed said they felt unprepared to face the massive challenges that were going to be confronting them in managing talent.
